NFL draft analyst Tony Pauline has the Patriots selecting JJ McCarthy at 3 overall

As the NFL Draft comes closer, New England Patriots executive Eliot Wolf has reportedly set his sights on a particular quarterback prospect, according to NFL draft analyst Tony Pauline.

Pauline"s insights, published in a two-round mock draft on Monday, suggest that Wolf is vigorously advocating for J.J. McCarthy, generating significant buzz during recent Pro Days.

“I’m not big on McCarthy being a top-10 selection, but the UM signal caller to New England was the buzz on the pro-day circuit," Pauline wrote.

“De facto general manager Eliot Wolf is pushing hard for McCarthy, and he believes he has as much upside as any quarterback in this draft."

This revelation adds a new dimension to the Patriots" draft strategy, especially given the widespread expectation that they might target other top quarterback prospects like Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, or Jayden Daniels.

However, the Patriots face stiff competition for McCarthy, as the Washington Commanders hold the second overall pick and are reportedly considering him as their top choice.

Executives around the league have identified McCarthy as the “most popular" pick for Washington, according to NFL Media"s Tom Pelissero.

This development has increased McCarthy"s odds of being selected early in the draft.

While the Patriots" draft position puts them behind Washington, the team"s interest in McCarthy signals a strategic shift in their quarterback evaluation process.

With Wolf leading the charge, the Patriots are actively exploring options to bolster their quarterback depth, potentially reshaping the franchise"s future.
