“It’s important that we get that piece” Chicago Bears GM Ryan Poles to Lead Debate on No. 9 Draft Pick Strategy; Pass Rusher a Key Consideration

The Chicago Bears will have two top-10 picks in the upcoming NFL Draft and the general manager of the squad, Ryan Poles, plans to organize an internal discussion about which position they will pursue considering the No. 9 pick.

Poles had shared as per Pro Football Talk via Chicago Bears, "I like the numbers in terms of the talented players that can get to nine. We’re going to do some cool things when we get back, kind of break into teams. One team is going to talk about [why] the tackle position is the best to go after, [why] the receiver’s the best, [why] the defensive end’s the best and use factual information to spit that out — and we’ll have a debate in terms of what’s more impactful for our football team, short-term and long-term."

The head coach, Matt Eberflus, told reporters last week at the league’s owners meetings that the squad would like to acquire a pass rusher to team up with Montez Sweat, the defensive end.

According to the Chicago Bears, the head coach mentioned, "It"s important that we get that piece because you have to have the 1-2 punch. It can be inside as well. You look at who affects the quarterback the most, I would also argue that the inside piece is also something that we should be looking at, and it"s important that we do that. Direct line to the quarterback. When they max protect, it"s a soft spot in the protection. We"re looking at all pass rushers. It can be inside, outside, all along the line. We"re having an open mind in that regard."

The Bears will have another option to handle their requirement for pass rush assistance than using the ninth pick; however, if the head coach and the staff decide to go through with this decision of acquiring the prospect, it will be a decided one.
