Despite Wembanyama’s strong defensive presence, Jokic managed to score on rare dunks. With the win, Denver reclaimed the top spot in the Western Conference, surpassing the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Nuggets now hold a half-game lead over the Thunder, who lost to the Philadelphia 76ers earlier that night. The Minnesota Timberwolves also remained in contention with a victory over the Houston Rockets.
In the game against the Spurs, Jokic’s hook shot broke a tie, but Wembanyama responded with a layup to even the score again. However, a clutch 3-pointer from Michael Porter Jr. and two successful free throws by Jokic secured the win for the Nuggets.
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich praised Wembanyama’s leadership and commended the team’s effort despite missing several injured starters. Wembanyama expressed the challenges of playing against Jokic and adapting to Denver’s high altitude.
Although Wembanyama missed more shots than Jokic, his passing and defense showcased his potential. Both Jokic and Gordon recognized Wembanyama’s promising future in the NBA.
Jokic mentioned the adjustments he made to score against the tall rookie, while Popovich looked forward to future matchups between Wembanyama and Jokic.
Their next meeting will be on April 12 in San Antonio.
