Kansas City Chiefs and Royals Future in Limbo as Jackson County Voters Reject Stadium Renovation Plan

The fate of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Royals has come under uncertainty as the Missouri’s Jackson County voters have rejected a sales tax measure that would have helped in renovation of Arrowhead Stadium and for building a stadium for the Royals.

According to the Associated Press more than 58% of voters dismissed the plan. Royals owner, John Sherman mentioned, “We’re deeply disappointed as we are steadfast in our belief that Jackson County is better with the Chiefs and the Royals. As someone whose roots run deep in this town, who has been a dedicated fan and season-ticket holder for both of these teams, and now leading a remarkable ownership group.”

The Mayor of Kansas City, Quinton Lucas also stated, “The people of Kansas City and Jackson County love the Chiefs and the Royals. Today, they rejected plans and processes they found inadequate. Over the months ahead, I look forward to working with the Chiefs and Royals to build a stronger, more open, and collaborative process that will ensure the teams, their events and investments remain in Kansas City for generations to come.”

The president of the Kansas City Chiefs, Mark Donovan also stated, “We respect the process. We respect the decision of the Jackson County voters. We’re disappointed. We feel we put forth the best offer for Jackson County. We were ready to extend the longstanding partnership that the teams have enjoyed with this county. This is important. . . . We will do and look to do what is in the best interest of our fans and our organization as we move forward.”

According to The Athletic via Fox4, the campaign manager for the Committee against New Royals stadium taxes, Tim Smith, shared through his opinions that it is a win for the common people, he stated, “The people all across Jackson County, no matter what their political persuasion was, took a chance to fight Goliath. I’m happy to report we slayed Goliath tonight. This is the message to the billionaires that regular people still matter”. Smith also admired the voters who took a different stand considering the Chiefs and the Royals.
