On Thursday, the Miami Marlins announced their right-hander Eury Pérez is set to undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the remainder of the 2024 season.

President of baseball operations Peter Bendix shared that Pérez will undergo Tommy John surgery with an internal brace on Monday and will miss the rest of the 2024 season.

"It’s been a bit of a roller coaster. Initially having the frustration of the elbow soreness and followed by the positive outlook on [thinking] you don’t need surgery right now. There was an understanding that the ligament was not in great shape and essentially, you can pitch with it until you can’t, and nobody knows when that’s going to be. You have to try and see when the symptoms return. And unfortunately, that happened now. Better now than in the middle of the season."

Pérez, was sidelined with elbow discomfort for the last several weeks, he had appeared 19 times and amassed a 3.15 ERA (142 ERA+) and a 3.48 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 91 innings.

At 21, he made his big-league debut last year and ended up finishing seventh in National League Rookie of the Year Award voting. He has not pitched since being shut down during spring training with a broken fingernail and elbow soreness.

Nicknamed "Baby Goat" one of the best young pitchers in baseball last season, he debuted in May, less than a month after his 20th birthday. In his nineteen games, he went 5-6 with a 3.15 ERA.

Pérez had initially complained about elbow soreness in spring and, after clean imaging by both the team and noted surgeon Dr. Keith Meister, he began playing catch a few days later.

However, more elbow discomfort last week during a bullpen led to his second visit to Dr. Meister, where his season-ending injury was detected, Tommy John for the young pitcher.
