I want to continue to play for Pittsburgh because it reminds me of where I’m from and how I was raised. Growing up and going through the hard times and good times together. I feel like the Pittsburgh media and fanbase and everyone kind of does that together. I feel very at peace and very comfortable in Pittsburgh.”
The talented Steelers tight end also shared his excitement to be catching passes from newly signed Russell Wilson.
A detail he found out not directly from the team but through his girlfriend who spotted the breaking news.
“My girlfriend woke me up and said, ‘You guys got Russell Wilson.’ So that’s how I found out,” Freiermuth said.
Freiermuth wasn’t the only one thrilled with the news. Wide receivers Calvin Austin and Van Jefferson were revealed to be part of the secret training session with Wilson in Southern California.
Wilson landed in Pittsburgh after being released from the Denver Broncos in March. Not stopping there, the Steelers also added another asset to their squad, acquiring Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears.
According to Head Coach Mike Tomlin, Wilson is in a ‘pole position’ for the starting quarterback in the 2024 season.
The 25-years-old Freiermuth is coming off a 2023 season that saw him battle with injuries. He made 32 receptions across just nine games, providing 308 yards and two touchdowns for his team.
Freiermuth recognizes that the 2024 season is a crucial period being his contract year. It’s not all unease as he’s set to work with not just Wilson but also new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.
