UConn has won its second consecutive and sixth all-time NCAA title, meanwhile, Purdue, which made its first Final Four in 44 years, is yet to win the NCAA Tournament.
The Huskies’s sixth men’s Division I title puts them in elite company, tied with North Carolina for the third-most titles in program history. The Tar Heels and Huskies trail only Kentucky (eight titles) and UCLA (11) for the most.
With back-to-back tournament titles, the UConn men’s basketball program has six national titles, an impressive feat given that only two schools (Kentucky and UCLA) have ever won more than six in the men’s game.
Senior guard, Tristen Newton, has been named the most outstanding player of this year’s NCAA Tournament, leading his team to a second consecutive title. He ended with 20 points and 7 assists in tonight’s title game.
Huskies coach Dan Hurley shared after the win,
“You can’t even wrap your mind around it, because you just know how hard this tournament is. What a special group of people.”
He also added,
“We’re kind of getting used to this up here, the confetti, the trophy. Number six, baby!”
UConn is now the eighth team in NCAA men’s basketball history to win back-to-back national championships following its victory last season against San Diego State.
