Chicago Bears Expected to Draft Former USC Star Caleb Williams as First Pick Amidst Controversy

The NFL Draft will be held this month and the Chicago Bears will have the first pick, which is highly-anticipated to be former USC star quarterback, Caleb Williams. The buzz around the USC prospect picked up speed when the Bears traded quarterback, Justin Fields.

During one of the episodes of Kevin Clark’s podcast, “This is Football” former NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst, Greg McElroy shared his opinions regarding the Heisman Trophy winner, stating that the quarterback has not gone through enough “adversity”.

McElroy further expressed uncertainty about whether Maxwell Award winner quarterback, will have the same level of state as the other NFL elite quarterbacks and if lack of adversity faced by him would hinder his development in the professional league.

He mentioned, “The number one thing that concerns me most about Caleb Williams, I look at all the players that have been drafted No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, way up there near the top of the draft. And seldom are the guys that ultimately go on to become elite players; every single one of them has a gigantic chip on their shoulder. Like, they are mad at the world, or they create some type of false narrative about themselves that people don’t believe in them. Caleb Williams never had that. I mean, Caleb Williams, from the time he stepped on campus at Oklahoma to the time he stepped on campus at USC, he has never has never experienced adversity, very little adversity as far as how he was received and how he was portrayed as the next best guy.”

Williams also responded to the tweet, mentioning, “Let’s go back to school again cause I’m bored rn. A state or instance of serious or continued difficulty or misfortune. Y1. Didn’t start freshman year. Y2. Popped hammy championship game 1st Q. Lost bc of my hammy. Y3. 7-5 my last year of college ball.”

The quarterback, through his remarks, shared how late in his freshman year at Oklahoma he was able to earn his starting position. He further mentioned the hamstring injury he had sustained in USC’s Pac-12 championship game, which was lost to Utah Utes with a final score of 24-47.

The quarterback had also earlier mentioned how the “outcome” would be changed if he wasn’t down with a serious injury. In the last, he disclosed about the 7-5 season with the Trojans.
