Former Eagles defensive end Fletcher Cox announced his retirement on Tuesday afternoon at the NovaCare Complex auditorium, where he spent all 12 seasons of his NFL career. The room was packed with fans and essential figures from Cox’s journey, including head coach Nick Sirianni, general manager Howie Roseman, and his family, especially his mom, Melissa.

Cox had hinted at retirement on social media in March, but it became official until this ceremony. Despite some hoping he might change his mind, Cox assured everyone that his decision was final.

“I know it’s April, and I wish this was an April Fool’s joke, but it’s not,” Cox joked, confirming his retirement.

Cox significantly impacted the Eagles’ franchise throughout his career, earning six Pro Bowl selections and multiple All-Pro honours. He played a key role in the team’s historic Super Bowl LII victory and came close to another championship in Super Bowl LVII.

Reflecting on his legacy, Cox emphasized his integrity on and off the field and his commitment to leadership, especially in mentoring younger players like Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter. He credited veterans like Trent Cole, Cullen Jenkins, and Darryl Tapp for guiding him early in his career.

Looking ahead, Cox plans to take it easy, focusing on his ranch and gradually transitioning into post-football life. While he hasn’t ruled out returning to the Eagles in a coaching capacity, he’s excited to spend more time with his family, particularly his nieces and nephews.

As for his chances of making it to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Cox remains humble, acknowledging that it’s ultimately up to others to decide. Nevertheless, he’s hopeful and eager to don a gold jacket and celebrate with his loved ones, including his football family in Philadelphia.
