The Boston Celtics and veteran guard Jrue Holiday have agreed upon a four-year extension worth $135 million, as reported by Adrian Wojnarowski.

Holiday agent, Jason Glushon of Glushon Sports Management, shared with ESPN that he declined a $37.3 million player option for 2024-25 to sign a long-term deal.

The Celtics guard has had an accomplished season, becoming a key cog in Boston Celtics’ defensive setup. The five-time All-NBA defensive selection has formed a fearsome backcourt with fellow guard Derrick White.

According to ESPN Stats & Information research, Holiday has defended 19 players for 40-plus half-court matchups this season, including New York’s Jalen Brunson, Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, and New Orleans’ Zion Williamson.

This season, he averaged 12.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.9 assists and has contributed to the Celtics’ rise to the number-one team in the league. Boston holds a 62-17 record, the best in the league, and has secured home-court advantage for the entire playoffs.

Holiday had arrived at the team after a blockbuster off-season trade, he arrived at the Celtics in a September trade from the Portland Trail Blazers.

Now he is the fourth player aged 33 or above to sign a fully guaranteed deal worth over $100 million. The other three on the list include LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Al Horford.

Furthermore, his extension allows the Celtics to save several million dollars on the cap next year. Allowing the franchise to retain the core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porzingis, Derrick White, and Holiday who has led the franchise to the NBA’s best record this season.

As ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, with Holiday’s extension, the Celtics are destined to operate as a second apron team in 2024-25, restricting their free agency and trade options for exceeding the highest payroll threshold.
