Detroit Lions" quarterback, Jared Goff, is not shy about expressing his opinion on the city"s media coverage.
He recently addressed his concerns regarding the local media"s negative outlook towards the team, regardless of its recent success.
Jared Goff"s critique came out during his appearance on the Wilbo Trading Cards podcast.
The Lions" star player highlighted an instance where he believes the local media “relishes in negativity."
“I have this like … and I probably need to drop it pretty soon because I’m hopefully going to be in Detroit for a very long time," Goff explained. “But I have this thing with our local media where they almost like relish in negativity at times. And maybe that’s what gets clicks and that’s what sells. But it’s no longer what they need to live in. Like, ‘Hey guys, we have a good team. We’ve had success. Like we can be happy about that. We can celebrate that, not constantly have to write about like how we’re constantly the underdog'"
Goff pointed out the emphasis on discussing the San Francisco 49ers" prospects rather than focusing on the Lions" strengths during the conference title game eve.
Goff believes this distracts from acknowledging the team"s accomplishments and player skills.
Hilarious exchange between Jared Goff and @bobwojnowski, who was trying to say how NFL fans may not know the Lions stars.
Wojo: "You have a lot of really good players"
Goff: "Thank you"
Wojo: "But maybe not viewed as superstars like the 49ers"
Goff: "Alright, never mind" 🤣 pic.twitter.com/yDKdffPjwi— Brad Galli (@BradGalli) January 24, 2024
Goff"s critique is tied to his long-term plan with the Detroit Lions.
The LA Rams" fresh trade-In seems ready to leave his mark on Detroit. Goff announced his intention to drop the criticism and focus on a positive future with the Lions.
“Teams are gonna be gunning for us now," Goff added during the episode. “We won the division and all that. And I’m probably overthinking it in my head because it’s the chip on my shoulder and the competitor in me, but in that moment I was just giving [the reporter] a hard time. I actually really like him."
The Lions acquired Goff in a trade for their star player, Matthew Stafford. Goff was initially seen as a temporary replacement by many.
However, his performance since partnering with Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson has impressed everyone, making his future at Detroit more solid than ever.
Goff"s outstanding performance has led to talks of a significant contract extension. By the end of 2024, Goff would have played for the Lions as long as he did for the Rams, thereby marking a significant chapter in his career.
He hopes to change the narrative around the Lions, from a team often surrounded by negativity to one recognized for its success and potential.
