Bryson DeChambeau drives went right into the pine trees at Augusta National Golf Club’s par-5 13th hole, during the second round of the 2024 Masters Tournament.

Nicknamed “the Scientist” for his calculative methods and experimentation in the game, was on full display on Friday, at Augusta National’s 13th hole on the way to a birdie.

He birdied the par-3 12th to regain the Masters lead at seven under par, where he had started the day when he blocked his tee shot at the iconic par 5 into the trees.

DeChambeau was seen eying a gap in the trees way to the right, playing into the neighboring 14th fairway, and began moving patrons away so he could play toward the 14th tee.

As one of the announcers on the Amen Corner livestream declared, “He’s parting the Red Sea” while another added, “Taking signs down? Don’t think I’ve ever seen that.”

As USGA, the rules permit players to move objects deemed as movable obstructions, DeChambeau carried the 9-foot sign on his shoulder, with the help of a volunteer.

He said on ESPN in a press conference after the round,

“It was probably like 30 pounds, it wasn’t too bad. I was looking at an opportunity to hit it back into the 13th fairway and look, it would have only led me 200 — a hundred yards in probably, something like that, and I knew I could hit one around the corner down 14 fairways and have a 140 to 150-yard shot in.”

Since he returned the sign, DeChambeau finished the second round 6 under, tied with Max Homa.
