Our thoughts go out to Dereck Lively and his family as they face this difficult time. Dereck Lively II, the talented 7-foot center from Duke University, has overcome various challenges in his life.
Born in Philadelphia in 2004, he is the only child of Dereck Lively Sr. and Kathy Drysdale, who passed on her love for basketball to him.
Not even 21 & has already lost both his parents. Mavs family will take care of my rookie. Kathy, you raised one hell of a kid & battled cancer like a champ. pic.twitter.com/zthBwu9tbW

At Duke, Dereck was known for his defensive skills and impressive wingspan of 7 feet 7 inches, averaging around 2.3 blocks per game.
Although his offensive abilities need improvement, his potential as a rim protector is undeniable. Despite personal hardships, Dereck has shown resilience in his academic and athletic journey.
Tragically, Dereck lost his mother, Cathy Drysdale, who had been battling cancer, and he expressed his heartfelt grief and appreciation for her in a touching Instagram post.

It’s so heartbreaking losing a mother. I can’t even imagine it. We must cherish our loved ones everyday before it becomes too late.💔

She saw him achieve a dream that he has had since a toddler. Relish in the happiness you shared, that’s the only thing that can save you from the dark days ahead.
