From one legend to another. Tiger Woods, who made his 24th successive US Masters cut this weekend said a fond farewell to announcer Verne Lundquist.
The play caller is 83 years old and stepped away from the mic from all sports except golf a few years back.
He called his 40th US Masters and one of the greatest icons of the game greeted him fondly on the 16th hole in yesterday’s final round.
Lundquist is remembered for one of the most revered Augusta moments when he called the famous chip from Woods on the 16th, a year he would go on to win the title, his then fourth Masters ninth overall at that stage. Tiger downed Chris DiMarco in a playoff to win the green jacket.
“Oh, wow! In your life have you ever seen anything like that?!” Lundquist exclaimed on that dramatic day.
“A man with magic in his hands, looked on by a man with magic in his voice. Those two, over the last 25 years, the definition of the Masters,” broadcaster Shane Bacon said calling the game.
Scottie Scheffler would go on to win the title.
