Often cited for his legendary contributions to the NFL over his incredible coaching career, Bill Belichick is no stranger to grooming potential talents.

Being affiliated with some of the greatest names of this sport, has witnessed the ups and downs of numerous players. One name that has stood out for him over the years is that of Lawrence Taylor.

When asked about the level of preparedness of rookies, Belichick pointed out that most players do not make significant impacts in their rookie years, not even the legendary Tom Brady.

He emphasized that it was Lawrence Taylor, the second overall pick in 1981, who arrived fully prepared to execute his role as a pro.

“Brady didn’t play his rookie year.” “You judge Tom Brady after his first year and you have literally nothing — you’re talking about the greatest player that’s ever played. Lawrence Taylor was a different story. Lawrence Taylor from Day One impacted the team, showed he was the best player on the field, way better than everyone else and built a defense around him from that point going forward. . . . It’s usually not Day One of his rookie year. I would say Lawrence Taylor would be the one exception to that rule.”

The beginning of Taylor’s magnificent journey in the NFL coincides with his draft by the Giants in 1981.

With his selection as the second overall pick, he was immediately under Belichick’s watchful eye, who was serving as the team’s linebackers’ coach at the time.

Taylor’s first few days on the training field were a revelation for his teammates, coaches, and the media alike.

His two sacks in his first preseason game were a testament to his unique skills and the flair that he would bring to the game.
