“He’s going out with one of the great voices of all time” Michael Kay Pays Tribute to Legendary Yankees Broadcaster John Sterling

New Yorkers were shocked to hear legendary radio voice John Sterling was abruptly walking away from the game this season. The 85-year-old has become a staple at Yankee games and his unique voice brought comfort to millions of baseball fans over an illustrious 35 year career. Since joining the Yankees in 1989, Sterling has gone on to announce over  5,700 regular season and postseason games for the organization.

Few people knew the Sterling as well as fellow broadcaster Michael Kay. The two have worked together since early in their careers and both covered the Yankees. Kay recently provided his views on Sterling after his decision to move on.

“He’s going out with one of the great voices of all time,” said Kay about his former colleague.

Kay was speaking on a recent epsiode of The Michael Kay Show and did admit he may have done things a little differently when it came to the sudden retirement announcement.

“I think I would probably finish out the year…I think what John is doing takes an incredible amount of guts,” added Kay.

Kay went on to say that he spoke with Sterling and the veteran seemed certain about his decision to call it quits. Sterling felt that this was the right time to retire and while baseball fans around the globe will miss his colourful commentary, we wish him only the best.
