My comment afterward was clumsy and awkward. I sincerely apologize.” – Columnist Gregg Doyel says sorry to Caitlin Clark after blundering heart gesture in press conference

Caitlin Clark’s name is being mentioned more than Luka Doncic these days and she has been a professional less than a day but is already drawn into a media storm.

Indianapolis Star columnist Gregg Doyel enjoyed an awkward moment in the press briefing after Clark was named the number one overall draft pick for the Indiana Fever.

Clark makes a “heart hands” signal to her family after each game. Doyel’s interaction with the star about this gesture turned as awkward as an Office episode.

He starts by doing the sign before eventually asking her to include him in the gesture after every game.

He was obviously being facetious, unfashionably bombastic and borderline weird, but his heart was in the right place.

He penned this message on his X page apologizing and will dedicate an entire column to his oafishness.

“Today in my uniquely oafish way, while welcoming Caitlin Clark to Indy, I formed my hands into her signature. My comment afterward was clumsy and awkward. I sincerely apologize. Please know my heart (literally and figuratively) was well-intentioned. I will do better.”
