NFL star Jonathan Owens, who is also the husband of gymnast Simone Biles, faced criticism for comments he made during a December 2023 interview on “The Pivot Podcast.”
The podcast host jokingly said Owens “was really the catch” in his relationship with Simone Biles, considering her immense fame as the most decorated gymnast ever.
Owens responded by saying, “I always say that the men are the catch.”
While Simone, who was present during the interview, found it amusing, Owens’ comment sparked controversy online. Many found it insensitive, considering Biles’ achievements, with some even urging Biles to divorce him.
Now, recently, Simone Biles discussed the online firestorm that erupted in late 2023 after comments her husband, NFL player Jonathan Owens, made on a podcast went viral.
Biles came to her husband’s defense on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast. She clarified that Owens’ words were taken out of context. She said he never downplayed her accomplishments and in fact, considers himself a “catch” because of his qualities.
However, the relentless negativity took a toll. Biles revealed she eventually broke down due to the online harassment directed at Owens. She said that it hurt her to see someone she cares about unfairly criticized. She also pointed out that people were judging Owens without knowing him personally.
Further, Biles drew a clear line. She mentioned that criticism of her is fair game, but she won’t tolerate attacks on her family.
Last month, Jonathan Owens joined the Chicago Bears. He signed a two-year contract with them after playing for the Green Bay Packers in 2023.
