Paul Reed expressed his satisfaction that the Philadelphia 76ers matched the offer sheet he signed with the Utah Jazz, even though it wasn’t his preferred destination. Reed acknowledged that business is business.

As he prepared for the upcoming season, Reed had focused on diversifying his game and has been diligently working on his jump shot. He is hopeful to play more at the power forward position and believes that the combination of his skills and the team’s performance against the Bucks last season could be a formidable force against other teams.
The Sixers decided to retain Reed by matching the three-year, $23 million offer sheet from the Jazz. A unique aspect of the contract is that the next two seasons become guaranteed if the Sixers advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2023.
The 76ers are matching Paul Reed’s three-year, $23M offer sheet with the Jazz, sources tell ESPN. Per sheet’s terms, Sixers must guarantee last two years of Reed’s deal if they win the opening round of playoffs this season.

This provision was orchestrated by Justin Zanik, Reed’s agent and now Jazz GM. Reed had an impressive performance last season, ranking in the top 10 in offensive rebounding percentage and making a strong impact in his playoff debut. The Sixers also made other signings, including Mo Bamba and Montrezl Harrell.
Paul Reed, a second-round draft pick from DePaul in 2020, has emerged as one of the top backup big men in the league. Last season, he averaged 4.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 0.7 blocks, and 0.7 steals in just 10.9 minutes per game. However, as a restricted free agent, Reed has signed an offer sheet with the Utah Jazz.
If the Philadelphia 76ers match the offer, they will retain Reed; otherwise, he would join the Jazz. The offer sheet is worth $23 million over three years, with the first season fully guaranteed and the following two seasons becoming guaranteed if Reed’s team reaches the conference semifinals in 2023-24.
One of the terms of the offer sheet provides a unique twist: The first season of the contract is fully guaranteed and the two following become guaranteed for $15.7 million if Reed’s team advances to conference semi-finals in the 2023-24 season, sources said.

The Sixers’ decision to bring back Reed is not affected by the recent signing of Montrezl Harrell. Reed has shown impressive defensive skills, ranking in the 99th percentile for steal rate and 94th percentile for block rate among centers.
Additionally, he brings intangible value to the team with his dependable play, energy, effort, and composure.

If Sixers match the sheet, they will exceed the $165M luxury tax threshold and incur an additional $14M in luxury tax penalties.
Reed would have veto power on a trade for a year if he remains with Sixers.— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) July 8, 2023
smart by the jazz to not make it depending on making it out of the 2nd round because the Sixers are allergic to that

This feels like a loophole that should be illegal lol… fully disincentivising Philly to match
— john roberts (@john_rob08) July 8, 2023
So it’s essentially a 1 year deal? Why wouldn’t Philly match that?
