Red Sox’s Whitlock on 15-day IL

Boston Red Sox pitcher Garrett Whitlock has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a left oblique strain. During Tuesday night’s game against Cleveland, Whitlock exited after four innings, allowing two runs and three hits.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora described it as a “slight strain” and expressed hope that Whitlock would return soon. To fill his spot on the roster, left-handed reliever Joe Jacques has been recalled from Triple-A Worcester.

Whitlock, 27, has been performing well this season, with a 1-0 record and a 1.96 ERA in four starts. Since joining the Red Sox in 2021, he has recorded an 18-11 record with a 3.39 ERA and nine saves in 23 starts and 80 relief appearances.

However, the Red Sox rotation has already been impacted by injuries, with Nick Pivetta also on the 15-day injured list and Lucas Giolito out for the season due to elbow surgery.

Red Sox pitcher Garrett Whitlock has been placed on the injured list (IL) due to an ailment, but the team is confident he will recover within the next 15 days.

The decision to rest Whitlock is a precautionary measure to prevent further complications. This is the second time in eight days that a Red Sox starter has been put on the IL, with Nick Pivetta also sidelined due to a flexor strain.

Pivetta is nearing his return and might be able to rejoin the rotation soon. The Red Sox are currently considering their options for future series and plan to take advantage of upcoming off days to reset their pitching group.

The Red Sox are confident that Whitlock’s injury is not a long-term concern and will shut him down from throwing for a few days.

Whitlock is the 11th Red Sox player and seventh pitcher currently on the IL.
