NBA legend Rex Chapman recounts hilarious encounter with Greg Allman

Former NBA player turned social media sensation Rex Chapman recently took to Twitter to share a side-splitting anecdote from his early days in the league, involving an unexpected run-in with legendary musician Greg Allman of The Allman Brothers Band.

Chapman, known for his witty commentary and engaging storytelling on social media, recounted the incident that occurred during his first road trip to New York City as a young basketball player.

“On my first ever road trip to New York, the team returned to the Grand Hyatt Hotel from shootaround," Chapman tweeted. “Several players from our team and several hotel guests piled on one of the elevators to go to our rooms."

In the bustling elevator, packed with players and hotel guests, Chapman found himself in the company of his teammate Kurt Rambis and another man who seemed to be familiar to Rambis. Little did Chapman know, he was about to have an encounter he wouldn"t soon forget.

“Kurt introduced me just as ‘Greg" was getting off the elevator. I shook his hand and said hello," Chapman recalled.

However, it wasn"t until after the man, introduced simply as “Greg," exited the elevator that Rambis dropped a bombshell on Chapman.

“Kurt said, ‘You have no idea who that was do you?'" Chapman tweeted. “I said, ‘I do now. That’s your buddy Greg." Kurt said, ‘That’s Greg Allman, Rex. Of The Allman Brothers.'"

Chapman"s response, as he admitted, showcased his youthful ignorance at the time. “Never heard of them," he confessed to Rambis.

To which Rambis humorously quipped, “Do you only play basketball?" Chapman"s self-deprecating punchline summed up the moment: “Yes… a young dummy."
