Frederic Weis has heavily criticised former NBA MVP Joel Embiid for his controversial decision to play for Team USA instead of Team France.
Weis is remembered for getting dunked on by eight-time All-Star Vince Carter but it’s important to remember that he was a member of the French team that won the silver medal at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Weis was a first round pick in the NBA but chose instead to play in Europe with a range of different clubs.
“I think he doesn’t have any respect for France and also for all the people who are asking for a French passport and don’t get it. And under the pretext that he is a great athlete, he got it. I find it scandalous, I find it embarrassing. I don’t care about his excuses, cause they are his words, and his words mean nothing,” said Weis when speaking of Embiid per Euro Hoops.

Embiid was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2014 after playing his college ball at the University of Kansas and a high school spell in Florida. Although he was born and grew up in Cameroon, he moved to the United States at the age of 16 and received French citizenship in 2022.
The 7’0″ star has been exceptional over the last few seasons in the NBA. Last season, he averaged 33.1 points, 10.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists. This year, he is averaging 34.7 points, 11 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game over 39 regular season games.
