The NBA community recently got revved up over a contentious moment that saw star player Jayson Tatum get roughed up on the court.

Caleb Martin’s aggressive move on Tatum during Game 1 of the series was hotly debated, triggering a flurry of opinion.

But basketball pundit and prominent Celtics fan Bill Simmons has his own unique take on the matter.

It was an unexpected jolt, a contact that left fans and players gaping. Caleb Martin of the Miami Heat, in a move many have tagged as uncalled for, went after Jayson Tatum of the Celtics.

This seemingly deliberate contact happened when all hope of victory for the Heat was practically extinguished.

Why then would Martin intentionally foul Tatum at such a critical moment?

On his popular podcast, Bill Simmons conjectured that Martin’s foul could have been unintentional.

The visual replay appeared to show Martin being bumped by fellow player Jrue Holiday, altering his balance and unintentionally hitting Tatum from behind.

“I thought he got shoved from behind by Jrue Holiday, which everyone missed. I watched the replay; I think he was a little off balance and crashed into him.”  Bill said.

Interestingly, Jayson Tatum was unfazed by the encounter. He brushed off the incident, converted the resulting free throws, and even suggested that such incidents were typical of the high-stakes playoff season.

It’s hard to imagine a scenario where a respected coach like Erik Spoelstra would instruct his player to deliberately cause an injury on the court.

His reputation suggests that any notion of encouraging a strategy involving intentionally harmful play is highly unlikely.
