NFL teams are still coming to terms with the new kickoff rules and we can expect to see some chaos in the opening weeks. After a trial and error period teams will likely defer to a standard approach, but that may take some time.
The Cleveland Browns are one team that is still trying to figure out their optimal strategy for the new rule that will see up to 19 players lineup 5 yards away from each other. Per a recent piece from NFL.com, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski spoke about the pros and cons of the new guidelines.
“We’re excited about what it is, but we’re working through it. I don’t think anybody in the league can tell you exactly how it’s going to look, but that’s an opportunity for us so we’ve spent a lot of time on the board with it,” said Stefanski.

The head coach who is about to start his fifth season with the Browns, did say that the new kickoff is a great opportunity to add some excitement to the game.
Over the last few seasons, the traditional kickoff has become monotonous and uneventful with most of the plays finishing in touchbacks. The Browns are doing everything in their power to ensure they have a competitive edge when the season starts.
“We want to be as prepared as we can be. But I don’t know that there’s any club that knows exactly how it’s going to look,” added Stefanski
