The New York Jets and club’s cornerback, Brandin Echols, who was selected in the 2021 NFL Draft in the sixth round as the 200th pick, are facing legal action due to an automobile accident that resulted in serious injuries to another person.
Stephen J. Gilberg of Livingston, the affected individual, has stated in court papers that he was driving on Columbia Turnpike, east near Airport Road, when Echols vehicle collided with his, the date stated is April 26, 2022, as per NJ.com.
The cornerback of the Jets, Echols, apparently hit Gilberg’s car after he lost control and Gilberg’s car, “catapulted into the air, striking and going over the guardrail, overturning and landing upside down in a marshy area.”
According to the lawsuit, which was submitted on Friday to the Morris County Superior Court, Echols was detained and apparently charged with a number of violations, including “speeding and reckless driving.”
The lawsuit also further mentions that the cornerback has a past record of driving recklessly and that the Jets were ineffective in searching Echols background.
The official document, as per the report, says, “New York Jets LLC did not exercise reasonable care in hiring defendant, Echols, as one of its players in that they failed to conduct the proper motor vehicle and/or criminal history checks and/or reference checks.”
After the accident, the player was arrested and also went to the pretrial intervention program for three years, as per the Daily Record report. Gilberg had sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized and his medical treatment is still ongoing. During the last campaign, Echols was suspended for one game as well.
