The Washington Commanders will have the second pick in the 2024 NFL Draft but before the pick is unveiled, the Commanders have made another significant announcement by honoring the team’s past achiever, former cornerback Darrell Green.
The two-time Super Bowl champion and Hall of Famer cornerback’s number will be retired by the Commanders and he becomes the fifth player whose number will be honored by the squad. Green was selected in the 1983 NFL Draft in the first round as the 28th pick.
The former seven-time Pro Bowl player shared as per ESPN’s John Keim, “It means a ton to me. I never thought about this, never dreamed about it, never asked about it, whatever. But when it was spoken to me, it blew me away. It caught me. It touched something down on the inside of me that I didn’t know was there. So now I’m very humbled by this, but this is huge. This is a big deal, and I’m grateful for that. And I’m that guy that played the whole career here, wasn’t chasing the money and stuff, and it just kind of, in many ways, it just validated, man, I made the right decision.”
Josh Harris, the managing partner of the Washington Commanders, shared as per the official site, “The Washington Commanders proudly announced today we will retire the jersey worn by one of the greatest players in NFL history, Darrell Green, during the 2024-2025 season. This decision comes as a tribute to Green’s unparalleled contributions to both our franchise and the league as a whole.”
“Darrell Green’s legacy transcends the boundaries of the football field. Throughout his remarkable career, Green embodied the values of excellence, perseverance, and sportsmanship on and off the field. His speed, skill, and dedication to the game and our community for a record 20 years earned him the nickname “The Ageless Wonder” and made him a beloved figure in Washington D.C., and beyond.”
