Anthony Rendon diagnosed with partially torn hamstring

Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon faces another setback as testing reveals a partially torn left hamstring.

The injury, sustained last week while attempting to beat out an infield hit, adds to a string of health concerns for the veteran infielder.

Rendon’s injury history has been plagued by significant setbacks, with this marking the fourth consecutive season of ailments.

In 2021 alone, Rendon faced four separate stints on the injured list, including a hip impingement that necessitated season-ending surgery and a torn tendon in his wrist requiring surgical intervention.

Last season, a left leg injury prematurely ended his campaign on July 4, amidst controversy over the nature of the injury; while the Angels labeled it a bone bruise, Rendon asserted it was a fractured tibia.

The absence of a specific timetable for Rendon’s return underscores the uncertainty surrounding his recovery process. This latest setback further complicates his tenure with the Angels, as he navigates a seven-year free-agent deal that has not unfolded as anticipated for either party.

Under new manager Ron Washington, Rendon had been a fixture at third base for much of the season, starting in 19 of the team’s first 21 games.

Despite posting a modest .267 batting average and a .325 on-base percentage, Rendon’s lack of power production, with only three extra-base hits (all doubles) and a .307 slugging percentage, has been cause for concern.

In Rendon’s absence, Miguel Sanó has assumed duties at third base, albeit with defensive trade-offs. However, Sanó’s offensive contributions, are highlighted by a .271/.362/.373 slash line in 69 plate appearances offers a glimmer of hope for the Angels.

While his inflated .441 batting average on balls in play is unsustainable, Sanó’s ability to drive the ball suggests potential for increased power production as the season progresses.
