Many were intrigued when Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy recently expressed his belief in the current group of running backs in the roster, including Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn.
In the same breath, McCarthy dropped hints that Ezekiel Elliott, a former player for the Cowboys, could be making his return to Dallas.
This comes after a roller coaster journey for Elliott in the NFL, where he shifted from the Cowboys to the New England Patriots.
Despite minute indications pointing towards a potential power-shift, the focus has remained on the talent within the current roster.
Dowdle and Vaughn are meeting McCarthy’s expectations and he believes they’ll improve in the team’s second year.
“I think they’ll be better in the second year of the offense,” I feel really good about where we are today . . . and it’s not over.” McCarthy said during a recent briefing.

Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn are currently the main running backs in Cowboys and have been consistently improving their performance.
Their contributions, along with others, contribute to a healthy and efficient team according to the coach.
In a conversation with Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, McCarthy showed earthy confidence in his team, saying, “It’s a young group, but they all have upside.”
He also hinted that the journey isn’t over yet, a statement that has sparked immense conversation and speculation amongst fans and analysts.
By saying, “It’s not over,” McCarthy subtly hinted at some dramatic moves for the Cowboys in the near future.
While his statement left room for interpretation, many believe it to be an indication that Ezekiel Elliott could rejoin the Dallas Cowboys.
Elliott, who played a stellar season for the Patriots in 2023, could return to Dallas and reinsert himself into the running back rotation.
