Dan Orlovsky Opens Up About Transition from NFL Quarterback to Prominent Football Analyst

The Motor City Bowl MVP of 2004 turned ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky played 12 seasons in the NFL as a quarterback. He was picked up in the 2005 NFL Draft in the fifth round as the 145th pick.

He played with various teams, including the Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Los Angeles Rams. Orlovsky has now solidified his position as a prominent figure in football television.

During one of the episodes of Ryan Clark’s “The Pivot Podcast” which was live for the 2024 NFL Draft weekend from Detroit, co-host Channing Crowder expressed that he was better at playing than Orlovsky, which was a way of informing Orlovsky that he is way better at his current job.

Crowder, who played with the Miami Dolphins throughout his professional football career, asked Orlovsky what he was best at doing, to which Orlovsky replied, “I think my best thing is I look at football like math. I am way better at TV than I was actually playing. I’m better at telling you what’s happening than actually doing it, unquestionably. I always loved math as a kid. I was always a numbers person. I think that one of the things that I guess, really enjoy is that I understand football in a math capacity. It’s 11-on-11.”

Orlovsky’s impressive viewpoints have been shaped by his experience in the league, and the analyst noted with ease how he was better at understanding the fundamental concepts of the game, analyzing them, and presenting them to the community rather than playing. In 2004, he was given the Walter Camp Connecticut Player of the Year award.
