Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo has closed the door on Tom Brady’s hint that he could return to play, but said he is welcome to join the team in another capacity.
Brady won six Superbowl titles for New England before adding a seventh after a stint at the Buccaneers.
“I love Tom, and the door is always open if he wants to come in here and coach,” Mayo said Monday morning on WEEI. “But as far as going on the field, I don’t know. But if he comes in here, once again, going back to the ‘hey, the best player will play,’ you’ve gotta come in here in compete, and he loves competition. I doubt he’s gonna be walking through these doors any time soon.”
Brady has dropped hints with the Raiders and Patriots likely teams he would consider coming out if retirement for.
The Patriots have give quarterbacks on the roster, two if them from the recently concluded draft so there won’t be much in the way of playing time for Brady, but Mayo is not silly enough to throw away his experience.
