As an undrafted free agent, John Rhys Plumlee secured a spot in the Steelers, garnering attention nationwide. Most of his college career, Plumlee played as a quarterback, but his agility points toward his future as a wide receiver.

During his college years, Plumlee played eight games as a quarterback for Ole Miss in 2019. Although he faced challenges as a passer, he made his mark as an exceptional runner, accomplishing an impressive score of 1,023 yards and 12 touchdowns in 154 sprints.

Plumlee’s journey took a new twist in 2021 when he lost the quarterback competition to Matt Corral and got limited exposure in a Taysom Hill-type gadget role.

Undeterred, Plumlee used the Outback Bowl as an opportunity to showcase his wide receiver skills, making five catches for 73 yards.

In the follow-up year, Plumlee transitioned into a full-time wide receiver, managing to catch 19 passes that spanned an impressive 201 yards.

However, the gameplay changed further in 2022 when Plumlee transferred to UCF. He returned to his initial role as a quarterback and showcased a decent performance through his two-year term.

Although as a quarterback, Plumlee’s prospects in NFL are uncertain, his exceptional athletic prowess indicates a promising future.

With an ability to strategically shift between roles, Plumlee brings his versatility to the field. His transfer to the Steelers implies that he could potentially contribute in numerous capacities in offense and special teams.
