In an exclusive interview with Overtime Heroics Senior Editor Reggie Roberts, Carolina Panthers offensive lineman Austin Corbett provided valuable insights into his NFL journey, including the best advice he’s received from a fellow player.
Roberts delved into Corbett’s experiences, seeking wisdom gleaned from his time in the league. Corbett recounted advice received from former University of Nevada teammate Joel Bitonio, emphasizing the significance of self-belief and confidence in facing the rigors of professional football.
“Joel kind of told me to feel like you belong and know you belong,” Corbett shared. “Coming from a smaller school, you just have those kind of thoughts in the back of your mind of, ‘These are the big dogs. I really don’t belong here.’ You get drafted where you got drafted for a reason and trust that. You’re here for a reason. You can play. You have proved it and you just have to go do it.”
Corbett acknowledged Bitonio, along with other teammates from his tenure in Cleveland, including J.C. Tretter and Kevin Zeitler, for their role in fostering a supportive environment. Reflecting on their shared experiences, Corbett highlighted the bond formed among teammates navigating similar stages of life, from marriage to impending fatherhood.
“We were all kind of at the same stages of life…newly married, first kid on the way,” Corbett recalled. “So, we were kind of able to develop and grow and our families are super close now and it’s fun to have been part of that process.”
