Former NFL linebacker and renowned champion, Bill Romanowski, finds himself at the center of a major taxation controversy.

Faced with a whopping civil lawsuit of $15.5 million for alleged unpaid federal taxes, Romanowski and his wife Julie are defendants in one of the most high-profile tax evasion cases in sports history.

The federal government brought forth this civil case, citing that the Romanowskis used their nutritional supplement company, Nutrition53, as a facade to evade tax payments.

This unpaid bill has now escalated to over $15.5 million, according to reports from USA Today. Department of Justice claims that the Romanowskis grossly misused Nutrition53 resources for personal expenses such as rent, groceries, and veterinarian bills.

Furthermore, the couple has been accused of financing over 170 visits to nail salons, hair salons, and day spas from the company’s account. Nutrition53 subsequently filed for bankruptcy last year.

Although embroiled in a financial crisis now, Romanowski’s career in the NFL carries a golden legacy.

The 58-year-old champion played with vigor and distinction for the 49ers, Eagles, Broncos, and Raiders over his 16-year long NFL career. His performances earned him four Super Bowl rings and two Pro Bowl selections.

However, Romanowski’s career wasn’t always a smooth sail. He has been repeatedly fined for foul play on achieving a notorious reputation.

In a shocking incident, teammate Marcus Williams sued him for causing an injury during a quarrel in practice. Post-retirement, Romanowski confessed to using steroids during his playing career.

Following his retirement, it appears that Romanowski’s legal troubles only escalated. The tax evasion case has thrust him back into the public eye, but this time, for all the wrong reasons.
