Jaguars Decline to Exercise 2025 Option on Mac Jones Contract

Over the weekend, the Jaguars made some moves regarding their roster, confirming they’re exercising their fifth-year options on contracts for quarterback Trevor Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne. However, there was silence regarding a third option: quarterback Mac Jones, whom they acquired from the Patriots earlier this year.

Jones, who is set to back up Lawrence, could have had his option exercised, ensuring him a hefty $25.664 million salary for 2025, matching Lawrence’s. But given their different roles on the team, it’s no shocker that the Jaguars are passing on Jones’s option, according to Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com.

With this decision, Jones is slated to hit free agency in 2025. The big question now is whether he’ll get enough playing time to prove himself worthy of another shot as a starter. It’s a wait-and-see situation as to whether Jones will get the opportunity to showcase his skills and make his case for a starting role in the future.
