“I’ve got his number ready to go just in case we need him” Texans HC DeMeco Ryans on Keeping His Options Open With Icon J.J. Watt

The former five-time Pro Bowl and three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Houston Texans icon, J.J. Watt, recently shared that he could make his comeback if Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans, "absolutely needs" him.

He had mentioned, "I’m a very fortunate, lucky man, I have a beautiful wife, I have a beautiful son. I"ve had 12 great years in this league and I"m very thankful to have walked away healthy and playing great. I told DeMeco [Ryans] last year: ‘Don"t call unless you absolutely need it, but, if you ever do call, I"ll be there." And he knows not to call unless he absolutely needs it. This is the last year I"ll tell him that, because I"m not going to keep training [the way] I"ve been training."

One of the greatest defensive ends to ever play in the league, Watt also shared that he would not be able to keep his training intact in the future and this would be the last year he is informing Ryans, who had led a successful campaign with Texans in his first year as a head coach.

The head coach light-heartedly shared his thoughts regarding Watt’s remarks, mentioning, as per Sean Pendergast of SportsRadio610, "I love to hear JJ saying he is ready, I’ve got his number ready to go just in case we need him. JJ playing in his softball event this past weekend it was fun to see all the guys. JJ looks good, he’s in shape, he’s ready to roll so I may need to make that call. So happy that it’s open from him. But JJ’s  outstanding player and he’s been outstanding player for a long time in this league and I am proud of him for what he is able to do in the community. Still reaching back and the people that he’s touched here in the city of Houston and is outstanding to see the response and all the people that showed up to support him this past Saturday. Man really proud of JJ."

Watt played with Houston from 2011 to 2020 for the majority of his incredibly prominent career, throughout which he achieved superlative feats. He last played with the Arizona Cardinals from 2021 to 2022. Watt was selected in the 2011 NFL Draft in the first round as the 11th pick by the Texans.
