The 150th Kentucky Derby saw Mystik Dan’s victory and attracted 16.7 million viewers, garnering the biggest audience for the race since 1989. From 7 to 7:15 p.m. ET viewership peaked at 20.1 million, subsequently becoming the biggest peak in audience for the race on NBC Network.

The announcement of the winner took time as Mystik Dan, Forever Young, and Sierra Leone reached the finish line together. The three racers hit the wire together in Kentucky Derby’s first three-horse photo finish since 1947.

Last year, the viewership recorded was 14.8 million, as compared to this year’s 16.7 million. The growth saw a 13% increase in viewership, according to the Associated Press. NBS Sports also mentioned that this year’s audience was the biggest since the 1989 race, which was watched by 18.5 million on ABC Network.

As per the report, the multiyear long-term contract extension between NBC Sports and Churchill Downs Inc. will see Kentucky Derby on the network through 2032.
