The controversy sparked off after former Colorado safety Xavier Smith told The Athletic that coach Sanders “was destroying guys’ confidence and belief in themselves.” Sanders responded that he didn’t remember Smith, who must have been “mid at best.”
Following the episode, Sanders said in a recent interview, with Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today, later published over the weekend on Thee Pregame Show,
“I gotta do better on that and not ride with it, but I was bored. I was bored, and I didn’t say nothing hurtful. I don’t attack people.”
Sanders also wrote on Wednesday, “Lawd Jesus.” He wrote the comment after Austin Peay DB Jaheim Ward pointed out that Colorado wide receiver Kaleb Mathis had just 38 receiving yards.
During the interview, he cleared up that he didn’t mean to ridicule Ward, and claimed he was misinterpreted, he explained this in the recent interview.
“I try my best to refrain, but like when you posted like stats, I said, Lawd Jesus, like dang, he really went at him, like he really shot him. That’s really what I meant, and I think that was taken wrong. I think that was taken sideways or something else.”
