The Super Bowl champion and five-time Pro Bowl cornerback of the Dallas Cowboys, Stephon Gilmore’s future with the Panthers is hanging in the balance as no new deal has come up for him.
The general manager of the Panthers, Dan Morgan had earlier stated that the team had been in communication with free agency cornerback and that they may finalize a deal after the draft. However, according to Joseph Person of The Athletic, Gilmore and the organization have not yet moved forward with any contract.
He stated, “There’s been no movement on this front despite the media interest. Maybe something will materialize with Gilmore closer to training camp, but nothing’s happening now.”
The Panthers selected cornerback Chau Smith-Wade as the fifth round pick however it was stated by Morgan that his inclusion will not put question on Gilmore’s future with the team. He had mentioned as per the Panthers Wire, “First off, we’re really excited about Chau. He can play inside, he can play outside. So we liked his versatility. He’s good on special teams. I think he’s a guy that can really contribute and make us better. I think, obviously, at every position, we’re gonna look to improve—not just the corner position.”
He further continued, “But again, we’re gonna try to create depth and competition everywhere. And as far as Stephon, we’re not gonna close the door on anything and we’ll continue to talk and explore and see where that goes.”
The NFL Defensive Player of the Year of 2019, Stephon Gilmore played with the Panthers in 2021 and he finished his last campaign with the Dallas Cowboys. He was born and brought up in South Carolina and played his collegiate career with the South Carolina Gamecocks. His history with the city is extensive.
In the last season, Gilmore started all seventeen games for the Cowboys and also played with Buffalo Bills for five seasons, and four seasons with the New England Patriots. In 2022, he was with the Indianapolis Colts and then joined the Cowboys in 2023. He ended his season with 68 total tackles, 13 passes defended, 2 interceptions, one forced fumble.
