While keeping his eye on the ball during a recent NFL Network appearance, Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Harrison Phillips has shed some light on the team’s shift in leadership.
With team captain Kirk Cousins and other key figures no longer in the team’s ranks, Vikings will be bracing themselves for the inevitable adjustments.
Harrison Phillips: We need leadership team to fill "big void" left by Kirk Cousins. https://t.co/iQxIDDSBi8

Phillips candidly admits, “There’s gonna be a huge loss,” “Kirk Cousins as a person, as a leader, as a teammate, that’s a big void in your locker room. One of the most humble guys that I’ve ever been around. Servant leader, just a great motivator. He’s great. To ask one person to fill that void is probably not probable. So what we’re going to do is have a great leadership team, which we’ve already seen. There’s already guys that I’ve seen these last few seasons being on this roster — some are captains, some are not captains yet but will be in their careers — and so we’re going to pass that torch off and kind of division of labor. We’re going to all carry that load together, and maybe we can be a better football team for it. Kirk’s obviously amazing. I’ve learned a lot from him and the leadership side of thing, and that’s an area I’m trying to step up and improve my game by working on those abilities.”
but is hopeful the team can cope with the disruption to the leadership structure as they navigate toward the fall.
The Vikings not only lost Cousins but also parted ways with powerful captains Danielle Hunter and Jordan Hicks. Their collective absence means the team needs to rebuild its leadership ranks.
However, all is not lost for the Minnesota Vikings. Phillips confidently believes that the Vikings possess “strength in numbers” in the leadership domain. This could be instrumental in grappling with the significant shifts in the team’s makeup.
The leadership dynamic, Phillips noted, will be heavily influenced by the team’s choice at quarterback. The successor to Cousins will undoubtedly play a crucial role in filling the leadership void.
One possibility could be J.J. McCarthy, the first-round pick who has proven his leadership chops previously. While at Michigan, McCarthy skillfully guided the team to a national title and multiple playoff appearances.
Despite his past successes, McCarthy will need to earn his spot before stepping into a key leadership role in Minnesota. His ability to shoulder the responsibility will be keenly observed.
