Torchbearers ignited the spirit of the Olympic Games as they carried the flame through the historic streets of Marseille, marking the commencement of its 11-week odyssey across France.

The flame’s arrival in Marseille, aboard a majestic three-mast ship, set the stage for a grand welcoming ceremony on the previous day.

The torch is embarking on an extensive journey, spanning approximately 10,000 bearers and traversing over 450 towns, culminating in the grand spectacle of the Games’ opening ceremony in Paris on July 26.

Former soccer luminary Basile Boli, renowned for his contributions to the Marseille team in the 1990s, initiated Thursday’s relay from the iconic Notre Dame de la Garde basilica, overlooking the scenic vistas of Marseille and the Mediterranean.

“I’m very proud,” expressed Boli. “You feel like you’re on top of the world, because with an Olympic flame there’s a special fervor. … It’s the symbol of sport.”

Joining the prestigious lineup of torchbearers was NBA Hall of Famer Tony Parker, who added his illustrious legacy to the relay. Along the bustling beaches of Marseille, spectators erupted into cheers as swimmers and sunbathers alike witnessed the passing of the flame.

The relay featured an eclectic mix of participants, including a fencing champion, a skateboarder, a Michelin-starred chef, and a comedian, each symbolizing the diverse spirit of the Games.

“Let’s go for a fantastic celebration,” exclaimed Tony Estanguet, president of the Paris Olympics organizing committee. “The Games are back in our country. … Let’s share this fantastic moment of celebration with millions of people in the country.”

Throughout the day, torchbearers traversed the city’s landmarks, culminating in the ascent to the renowned Stade Velodrome, the fervent home ground of Marseille’s soccer aficionados. The honor of lighting the Olympic cauldron awaited former Marseille club star Didier Drogba, hailing from the Ivory Coast.

“It’s fantastic to give that sense of pride to the French people and to show to the whole world what we’re capable to achieve,” remarked Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra. “We’re going to give happiness to the whole world.”

Ukrainian gymnast among torchbearers in Marseille

Among the torchbearers stood Ukrainian gymnast Mariia Vysochanska, an embodiment of solidarity with Ukraine and a symbolic gesture commemorating Europe Day on May 9. Vysochanska’s inclusion highlighted the unity of the European Union, with 27 other athletes representing member states.

Reflecting on her participation, Vysochanska expressed profound pride and happiness, underscoring the significance of Ukraine’s representation amid personal family struggles amidst conflict.

Marseille’s festivities welcomed the flame with open arms, drawing over 230,000 attendees to the vibrant celebration at the Old Port, according to Mayor Benoît Payan.

As the flame embarks on its journey, Marseille stands ready to host the sailing competition and select soccer matches during the Games, epitomizing the city’s enduring Olympic spirit.
