The Phoenix Suns have officially filled their coaching vacancy with a big-name hire. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, the Suns have inked a lucrative five-year deal with Mike Budenholzer, valued at over $50 million.

Budenholzer brings an impressive resume to Phoenix, having been named NBA Coach of the Year twice in his career. With an overall coaching record of 484–317, he’s no stranger to success on the sidelines. This new role with the Suns marks his third stint as head coach, following previous stints with the Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks.

During his time with the Bucks, Budenholzer achieved remarkable success, leading the team to a 271-120 record over five seasons. Most notably, he guided the franchise to an NBA championship in 2021, defeating none other than the Phoenix Suns in the finals. Under his leadership, players like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton, and Jrue Holiday flourished, contributing to the team’s stellar postseason performances. Now, Budenholzer faces a new challenge in the desert with the Suns.

The Phoenix Suns announced on Thursday their decision to part ways with head coach Frank Vogel after just one season. The move comes in the wake of the Suns’ disappointing first-round playoff exit, where they were swept by the Minnesota Timberwolves despite entering the playoffs as the No. 6 seed.

“After careful consideration of the season, we have determined that a change in head coach is necessary for our team, We acknowledge Frank’s dedication and effort during his time with us.” : stated Suns president of basketball operations James Jones.

Despite boasting a talented roster featuring stars like Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal, and Devin Booker, Phoenix fell short in the 2023 playoffs, exiting in the first round at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves. This disappointing end led to the dismissal of former head coach Frank Vogel after just one season.
