“Of course I do.” Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith on whether he thinks there should be an asterisk next to the Michigan Wolverines after sign-stealing saga

The Athletic Director at Ohio State Gene Smith will never quite forgive the Michigan Wolverines after the sign stealing scandal which marred their national title last season.

Michigan analyst Connor Stallions was caught stealing signs from opposition coaches, and the scandal broke in October.

This means that teams like Alabama and the Buckeyes can have no real reason for calling for a disadvantage as the Wolverines were crowded champions.

But asked whether he believed Michigan should have an asterisk behind their name he said, “Of course I do.”

Smith was speaking on the “All Sides with Anna Staver” show” and seemed to be joking.

He did quantify his statement on his view of the scandal and asked if they should have asterisks next to their name reinforced his view.

“The rules are in place to protect the integrity of the game and try your best to create a level playing field,” Smith said. “When those rules are violated, then it affects those principles. We have to keep that in perspective.”

The AD called for a marker next to the last three results between the schools as Michigan won all three consecutively.

There is little to no chance the NCAA will even react mildly to the suggestion, so this is mainly going to be a buzz phrase is social media for many years, but little else in the way of formality.
