During a recent game, St. Louis Cardinals designated hitter Matt Carpenter achieved a rather unusual feat. As he swung at a pitch, his bat broke before making contact with the ball. The upper part of the bat flew off and spiked itself into the turf right in front of the mound.
Despite this, Carpenter managed to make contact with the ball, which deflected off the catcher’s glove. It’s certainly one of the more peculiar foul ball scenarios in recent years. The Cardinals ultimately secured a 4-3 win against their National League Central counterparts.
This strange occurrence can perhaps be attributed to the force with which MLB players swing their bats. The incident was caught on replays, showing that the bat broke even before the ball made contact. The broken bat landed in the grass and embedded itself into the dirt.
It was quite a remarkable sequence of events.
