Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese are two of the brightest young stars in the WNBA. Their rivalry stems from their college days at the University of Iowa (Clark) and LSU (Reese). Finally, it culminated in a dramatic matchup in the 2023 NCAA Championship game.
The fire started during the 2023 championship game. LSU was the winner, and Reese’s celebratory gesture towards Clark (mimicking wrestler John Cena’s “You Can’t See Me”) fueled media narratives of a bitter rivalry.
Now, Caitlin Clark expressed frustration in a recent documentary. She shared that the media focus on their rivalry overshadowed her team’s achievements. And, she pointed out her desire for the team’s journey to be recognized.
“That’s the only thing people wanted to talk about when we just went on this magical run and united so many people, and that, like, was frustrating to me,” Clark said in the ESPN+ four-part series “Full Court Press.”
FYI, despite media portrayals, both players insist their competition is strictly on the court. Reese clarified in the documentary that their battles are driven by a desire to win not personal animosity.
Indiana Fever secured Caitlin Clark with the number one pick. And, Angel Reese was drafted in the 2024 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky (7th overall in the first round).
