The New York Mets were almost handed the curviest of curve balls in their extra innings loss to the Phillies last night as a basic umpiring error caused tremors.
The incident happened in the top of the tenth inning, with Mets pitcher Sean Reid-Foley at the mound.
He threw a fastball to Nick Castellanos at 3-2 and was rightly called high for ball four.
The drama unfolded when the scoreboard, prior to the pitch showed a full count and when Castellanos was rightly sent first base, it caused the umpires to congregate and debate a missed count.
Keith Hernandez, announcing the game was gobsmacked at the call, and voiced his frustration.
“Oh boy,” Hernandez said. “You can’t be messing up…oh man. This is…What do you got an indicator for?”
He was livid to the point of bursting and continued his diatribe.
“This is embarrassing,” Hernandez said of the umpires losing track of the pitch count.
“This should not happen on a Major League level.”
The video board probably had a glitch, but that is not what made Hernandez mad. It was the umpires having to temerity to question their basic math without relying solely on technology.
