Kansas City Chiefs kicker, Harrison Butker delivered his commencement address on May 11, 2024, at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas.
The speech gained attention due to its content. Butker, a practicing Catholic, spoke about his faith and conservative political views. Also, his comments on women were seen as sexist. He suggested their primary role was as wives, mothers, and homemakers which downplayed the importance of careers for women. This clashed with the idea of women having equal opportunities in the workplace.
He also made remarks critical of the LGBTQ+ community by referring to pride month as a celebration of “deadly sin.” This offended many who believe in LGBTQ+ rights and inclusivity.
Additionally, he also criticized lockdown measures during the COVID-19 pandemic and expressed views on abortion and family planning that many found objectionable.
Once the speech went viral, a petition calling for the Kansas City Chiefs to release him garnered significant signatures.
The NFL also distanced itself from Butker’s speech, clarifying his views did not represent the league’s commitment to inclusion and diversity.
Now, a former LGBTQ commissioner in Kansas City, Justice Horn, is urging the Chiefs to address Butker’s comments. This likely means that he wants the Chiefs to publicly condemn Butker’s views and possibly take disciplinary action.
Previously, he strongly condemned Butker’s views and argued that Butker doesn’t represent the city’s values of inclusivity.
Note: The speech was well-received by the graduating class and those attending the ceremony at the institution. Benedictine College is a private Catholic institution, and its views on gender roles might differ from the wider public.
