The Miami Dolphins showed that they believed Tua Tagovailoa was the man to lead the franchise forward when they used the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft to select the former Alabama star. Tagovailoa is entering the final year of his rookie deal and if the Dolphins still believe he is their future quarterback, they will have to loosen the purse strings and invest big.
Tagovailoa is set to earn $23 million in 2024 but according to a recent report, that number is nowhere close to the figure it will take to secure the 26-year-old to a long-term deal.
According to ESPN"s Jeremy Fowler, the quarterback has already missed OTA time. The Dolphins have already made an offer but it is apparently not in the range that Tagovailoa and his team have in mind.
“They have had contract talks, preliminary talks. I"m told that the Dolphins have made at least one contract offer but we know how these things go; the offer apparently hasn"t been good enough or he"d probably be there full time," said Fowler on SportsCenter. “So, the market is pretty set. We saw Jared Goff, $50-plus million a year, that"s going to apply to Tua and Trevor Lawrence."
