Wednesday Winners: Six MLB Underdogs to Bet (6/26)

The baseball statistical underdogs rebounded from a horrific performance on Monday, and produced a respectable showing on Tuesday. Of the fourteen games that had a statistical underdog (Braves and Cubs did not), the underdogs went 5-9. This is much better than their 1-6 showing on Monday. Before looking at six underdogs to take on Wednesday, let’s see how we did for the past six days.

June 20-24: We went 13 for 26 (50 percent success rate). If the bettor had bet $50 on every game we picked over that 5 day period, they would have ended up $233.25.

June 25: We went 3 for 6 (50 percent success rate). We won the Royals, Twins, and Athletics, while losing the Reds, Rockies, and Marlins. On the day, if the bettor has bet $50 on each game we picked, they would have ended the day up $69.50 (the Royals helped this out by being +210 yesterday)

Now, here are six underdogs you should consider betting in Wednesday’s MLB action.

Texas Rangers (-102) @ Detroit Tigers, 7:10 EST Start

Mike Minor looks to extend his record to 8-4 on Wednesday night against the Tigers.

Very quietly, the Texas Rangers have found themselves tied for the second wild card spot in the American League. They are 6-4 in their last 10 games, and are actually only six and a half games behind the Astros in the American League West. They have been led this year by their ace on the hill, Mike Minor.

Mike Minor is 7-4 with a 2.52 ERA this season. He has been the face of consistency for the Rangers, which is something their pitching staff usually does not have. He has given up three runs or less in fourteen of his last fifteen starts. The Rangers have won every game that Minor has started in the month of June.

The Tigers will counter with Matthew Boyd, who has been their best pitcher this season. He is 5-5 on the season with a 3.61 ERA, and a 1.11 WHIP. He has struggled in June, however, seeing his ERA rise from 2.85 to 3.61 over his four starts in June.

Due to Minor’s consistency, Boyd’s struggles in June, and the fact that the Tigers are 1-9 in their last 10 games, bet the Rangers with confidence today.

Miami Marlins (+135) vs. Washington Nationals, 7:10 PM EST start

Zac Gallen will be looking for his first Major League win Wednesday against Washington.

The Marlins have really struggled at home recently, going 2-9 in their past 11 home games. That trend continued Tuesday night as they ran into the buzz-saw that is known as Max Scherzer. Scherzer dominated once again, and the Marlins lost 6-1. Wednesday’s pitching match-up is definitely a little better for the Marlins than Tuesday’s was.

The Marlins will send Zac Gallen to the hill for his second major league start. In his first start, he threw five innings of one run ball against the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. He looks to build off of that momentum and pick up his first career victory tonight against the Nationals. Remember that Gallen was 9-1 with a 1.77 ERA in Triple-A before being called up to the big leagues.

The Nationals will send Patrick Corbin to the mound on Wednesday, and he has struggled on the road as of late. Corbin is 6-5 on the season with a 3.90 ERA, but he has given up 24 runs over his last four road starts (17 and 2/3 innings of work). Look for the Marlins to try to get to Corbin early tonight.

Looking at this pitching match-up, expect the Marlins to right the ship at home tonight, and bet them with confidence.

Toronto Blue Jays (+220) @ New York Yankees, 1:05 PM EST Start

Trent Thornton is looking to cool off the hot bats of the Yankees on Wednesday afternoon.

The New York Yankees are the hottest team in baseball, plain and simple. They are 9-1 in their last 10 games, and have extended their record at home to 30-14. Their lineup is awesome to say the least, especially after the return of Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. They extended their MLB Home Run streak to 28 consecutive games on Tuesday. They are firing on all cylinders.

Yet, the Toronto Blue Jays may actually be a value play on Wednesday. The Blue Jays came to Yankee Stadium after winning two out of three games at Fenway Park last weekend. The Blue Jays have hung in there this series, losing by two runs and one run in the first two games. In addition, Toronto has also won their last four series closing games (against Boston, Houston, LA Angels, and Baltimore).

On paper, the pitching match-up doesn’t seem to favor Toronto, until you look deeper into their records. The Yankees send James Paxton to the hill, who is 5-3 on the season with a 3.75 ERA. In his only start against Toronto this season, he gave up four runs in 4 and 2/3 innings of work. He has won his last two starts, but he has thrown 100 or more pitches in both of them.

The Blue Jays send Trent Thornton to the mound in the final game of this series. Thornton is 2-5 on the season with a 4.25 ERA. He has, however, been much better on the road this season than he has been at home. In his last seven road starts, he has only allowed 11 runs over 41 and 1/3 innings (2.40 ERA). Those include quality starts at Houston, Boston, and Texas.

If you are looking for a flier in today’s action, Toronto may be the team you are looking to bet. Remember that a $50 bet will win you $110.

Baltimore Orioles (+112) vs. San Diego Padres, 3:05 PM EST start

Dylan Bundy looks to get his fourth win of the year on Wednesday against San Diego.

The return to Camden Yards of Manny Machado went really well for the visitors on Tuesday, as the Padres won game one of the series by the score of 8-3. The two teams will meet again on Wednesday afternoon in a match-up of pitchers with bad won-loss records this season.

The Padres will send Matt Strahm to the hill. Strahm is 2-6 on the season with a 4.85 ERA. He had a nine game stretch this season in which he gave up three runs or less in all nine games. He has struggled recently, though, giving up 17 runs in his last three starts over 12 and 2/3 innings of work. He will be looking to right the ship and return to the pitcher he was in May.

The Orioles will send Dylan Bundy to the hill. Bundy is 3-9 with a 4.59 ERA. Bundy, however, has given up three runs or less in eight of his last nine starts. Over those nine starts, he has only won three of them, due to lack of run support from his offense. In six of those nine games, his team scored three runs or less (two runs or less in five of them).

Look for Bundy to continue his consistent season, and for the Orioles offense to give him some much needed run support. Bet the Orioles today to take the second game of the Machado homecoming series.

Cincinnati Reds (+105) vs. Los Angeles Angels, 8:07 EST start

Tanner Roark looks to end the Reds current three game losing streak on Wednesday night.

The Reds have been streaky as of late. After a six game winning streak which included two wins against Milwaukee and a sweep of the Astros, they have now lost three straight games. The Reds lost game one of the series against the Angels by the score of 5-1. Luckily for them, they lost no ground in their divisional race, as all five teams from the National League Central lost on Tuesday.

The Angels got themselves to .500(40-40) with their win over Cincinnati on Tuesday night. The Angels have been playing good baseball, as they are 6-4 in their last 10 games. They look to move over .500 tonight when they send Jaime Barria to the mound. Barria has a 6.52 ERA, but gave up one run in five innings in his first start since rejoining the rotation last week.

The Reds send Tanner Roark to the mound on Wednesday night. Roark has a 3.47 ERA on the season, but has a won-loss record of 5-6. He has given up three runs or less in eleven of his fifteen starts, and he hasn’t given up more than four runs in any start this season. He has been very consistent for the Reds, but his offense hasn’t returned the favor, as they have scored three runs or less in six of his last eight starts.

This will be an interesting match-up, but look for the Reds offense to finally give some run support to Roark. This will probably be a close ballgame, but take the Reds to end their three game losing streak.

Kansas City Royals (+190) @ Cleveland Indians, 1:10 PM EST Start

The Royals scored five runs in the ninth inning last night to beat the Indians 8-6.

The Kansas City Royals shocked Progressive Field on Tuesday night, scoring five runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Indians 8-6. The Royals hammered Brad Hand in the ninth inning, including a grand slam by Hunter Dozier, which sent Hand to the showers without recording an out. After splitting a four game series with the Twins and taking last night’s game, the Royals will look to build off that momentum by taking today’s game in Cleveland.

In Wednesday’s pitching match-up, the Royals send Jakob Junis to the mound. Junis is 4-6 on the season with a 5.18 ERA, but has given up three runs or less in five of his last six starts. The Indians counter with Trevor Bauer, who is 5-6 with a 3.69 ERA on the season, but has had his struggles in recent games. He has given up four runs or more in eight of his last eleven games (six of those eight were at home).

Look for the Royals to be brimming with confidence today, and take the series win over the Cleveland Indians.
