Cleveland Cavaliers Sign Guard Sindarius Thornwell

The Cleveland Cavaliers have not made many moves this offseason, but yesterday they signed former Los Angeles Clipper, Sindarius Thornwell, to a one year deal. The shooting guard will hope to fill one of the Cavs’ final roster spots. Thornwell has played all of his young career with the Clippers. Since coming to the NBA from the G League, Thornwell has averaged 2.5 PPG, 1.3 RPG and 0.6 APG. These are measly stats, of course, but the 24 year old will have an opportunity to maximize his potential on a developing Cavs team.

Thornwell will have to compete with other shooting guards to bolster a spot in the rotation. Jordan Clarkson, Kevin Porter Jr. and either Darius Garland or Collin Sexton will to get most of the minutes at the two spot. Cleveland will be a make or break location for Thornwell. He is going to be expected to work hard and push younger guys for their minutes. Thornwell will earn minutes by doing what he is good at, tough defense. He had fit in well with the Clippers and their stellar defense. The Cavaliers must hope that he can create a much needed defensive culture.

The Cavaliers have an abundance of guards who will all compete for minutes. Although it will likely be another rebuild year, Cleveland will look to win more games this year with their young core. Thornwell brings in a competitive spirit that is needed for player development. Thornwell will be an x factor in this vital year of Cleveland’s rebuild. With many changes of scenery for some of the NBA’s top players, the Cavaliers have stuck to their plans to draft high ceiling players. With Kevin Love,30, being the team’s oldest player, it is clear that the plan is to build a young core with minimal veterans.

Thornwell will hope to compete for the fourteenth spot on the Cavalier roster. He had offers from several other teams, but he felt that Cleveland had the best situation for him. This should say that he expects to play solid minutes and contribute. The Cavaliers also brought in J.P. Macura and Marques Bolden on exhibition 10 deals. Training camp should be very interesting with many young guys competing for roster spots. This should create some competition in Cleveland.
