Chris Jericho Is The Right Man For The Job

This past Saturday night at All Out, Chris Jericho defeated “Hangman” Adam Page to become the inaugural AEW Champion.

Without question this was the correct decision. One I believe was made before the match was even announced and here is why.

Chris Jericho has been wrestling since 1990, that’s almost 30 years in the professional wrestling business. He has been able to stay relevant by constantly reinventing himself in front of a new audience. When starting a new promotion and launching a weekly television show you need someone with a built in audience to be the face, so who better than Jericho.

From the die hard to the casual fan, Jericho is a name they all know. This gives AEW instant credibility with fans, who will tune in to see what’s next for the veteran.

If I had to guess, Jericho is likely going to be wrestling part-time. Reserved for working the PPV’s and some of the bigger television spots. This isn’t a bad thing, sometimes less is more. Hulk Hogan wasn’t on TV every week in the 1980’s. Brock Lesnar wasn’t a weekly staple on WWE television while Universal Champion. When Jericho does show up it;s going to be special.

In addition, it gives your undercard a chance to develop, introduce some new characters that fans may not know. Allow the audience discover the rest of your product. AEW can always run vignettes with Jericho, but he doesn’t have to be there every week.

Another reason why he was the correct choice is because he is working heel. AEW has some fantastic babyfaces that could chase for the title. We could see the rematch with Page, but we also could see Cody, Kenny Omega, Penta El Zero M and the returning John Moxley.

The programs these men would be able to work while chasing Jericho for that title could fill the calendar year out. For now they have roughly six weeks to build up a contender for AEW’s next big event Full Gear.

If I was Tony Khan I know I could rest easy, knowing that my champion is one of the best to ever don a pair of wrestling boots.
